Assessment Breakdown

Though we will discuss this criteria more in class, your masks will be primarily be marked on the level of effort and thoughtfulness put into the following areas:

1. Planning Process in your Sketchbook. Each of these steps in the planning process will be described more in detail as we get to them, but for the sake of a quick overview, your sketchbook at the end of this unit should include thoughtful planning of the following:

_the symbolism question sheet

_ your list of the 5 symbols you tried to include

_the front view and side view of your favourite design

2. Symbolism – How much consideration was given to making your mask’s structural forms and paint job symbolize the character/function of your mask?

3. Ambitiousness – Did you challenge yourself to make a complex design? Did you really push yourself to make something original, interesting, and complex? Or did you default to what you knew would be easy to do?

4. Craftsmanship – How well is your mask constructed/painted?

Construction: How well do your mask’s individual parts connect with one another? Is there a smooth transition from one part to another? If not, is that deliberate, for effect?

Paint: How well do the patterns, shading, and/or texture used to paint your mask add interest to your mask

Does your mask look finished and polished?
